How Does Superannuation Work?
Superannuation (super) is Australia's compulsory retirement savings system. Employers must contribute a percentage of your salary into your super fund — this is called the Superannuation Guarantee (SGC). From July 2024, the SGC rate is 11.5%, rising to 12% by July 2025. Your money is invested and grows over your working life, becoming accessible when you reach preservation age (typically 60).
SGC Rate Schedule
| Financial Year | SGC Rate |
|---|---|
| 2023–24 | 11.0% |
| 2024–25 | 11.5% |
| 2025–26 and beyond | 12.0% |
2024 Contribution Caps
| Type | Annual Cap | Tax Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Concessional (pre-tax) | $30,000/yr | 15% (vs marginal rate) |
| Non-Concessional (post-tax) | $120,000/yr | 0% contributions tax |
| Catch-up (unused concession) | Up to $150,000 total | 15% |
💡 Tip: Salary sacrificing into super is taxed at 15% instead of your marginal rate — one of Australia's best legal tax strategies for high earners.
