How Does Superannuation Work?

Superannuation (super) is Australia's compulsory retirement savings system. Employers must contribute a percentage of your salary into your super fund — this is called the Superannuation Guarantee (SGC). From July 2024, the SGC rate is 11.5%, rising to 12% by July 2025. Your money is invested and grows over your working life, becoming accessible when you reach preservation age (typically 60).
