How the German Pension System Works
Germany's statutory pension (gesetzliche Rentenversicherung) is a pay-as-you-go system. You earn pension points (Entgeltpunkte) for each year you work. Each point equals one year earning exactly the average German wage. The current pension value (Rentenwert) is approximately €37.60/month per point in West Germany (2024).
